It’s Day 1 of the #WhyAshtangaYoga challenge and #PersonalPractice is the theme today. My Ashtanga practice began after a running injury in 1999. Instead of the doctor suggesting surgery he mentioned Yoga. I thought he was nuts, as the first thing that came to my mind was twisting myself into a pretzel and/or standing on my head. I wound up taking his advice and began practicing what I didn’t realize at the time was Surya Namaskar A, at home for nine months. I regained mobility in my knee, but instead of running seven days a week like I used to, I relied on the personal practice to calm my monkey mind. Ardha Uttanasana is still my favorite #asana to lengthen the spine and keep me balanced.
