“The beautiful journey of today can only begin when we learn to let go of yesterday.” – Steve Maraboli
While taking a walk on the beach last week I began to reminisce about the unfinished work that needed to be done the previous day—the deadlines for my columns, responses to emails and little chores that would take but a minute to complete. As my feet met the shoreline I hung my head in disappointment. Because of my procrastination I wasn’t able to finish all that I intended to do and drifted away from the present moment into a state of guilt. I wanted desperately to return to the office and get caught up on my work.
Suddenly the song “Yesterday” by The Beatles entered my mind. I began humming the lyrics, as I did when I was a little girl.
“Yesterday…all my troubles seem so far away,
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay.
Oh I believe in yesterday.”
Did songwriter Sir Paul McCartney possess an innate wisdom we did not? Are the drudged memories of the past destined to fade in the distance and never be heard from again, or are we to believe that the thoughts and actions of yesterday will help lead us fully into the present moment?
“Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone.” ~ Lin Yutang
I realized that yes, at times the past becomes more familiar; as if destiny has forced us to repeat experiences time and time again. This occurs when we refuse to see ourselves in the here and right now. It is not possible to relive yesterday, and many attempt to undo what cannot be undone.
Taking a long, deep breath, I spent the remainder of my time on the beach practicing the art of letting go of yesterday and happily leaving things undone. What one can only accept is truth, and that is what the present moment continues to bestow on us.
Below is a short clip about letting go. Have the thoughts and actions of yesterday seem to have crept into your today? Please share your comments below.
