GMOs – We Do Have a Choice

Let food be thy medicine, thy medicine shall be thy food. ~Hippocrates

A few years ago my husband and I were walking through the local Whole Foods Market looking for some vegan snacks. We came across Annie’s Homegrown Cheddar Bunnies, and although I was very strict about my vegan lifestyle I couldn’t help but be drawn to these cute bunny-shaped treats.

I read through the ingredients, then nutritional information… 0g Trans Fat, Low Saturated Fat, No Cholesterol, No Sugar Added and Contains Non-GMO. I had no idea what the term meant. What the heck was GMO? Was it something that can be found in just meats and seafood? If that was the case, why should I care? I was a vegan, and was exempt from this madness. Or so I thought.

A few months later I received an email from a friend and “List of Vegetables that are Genetically Modified” was in the subject line. The list consisted of soybeans, corn, tomatoes and other vegetables I consumed on a regular basis. I guess I wasn’t exempt after all. Even the words “genetically-modified organisms” gave me the creeps. Could our society actually be controlled by the foods we eat?

After tirelessly researching non-gmo foods I finally stumbled upon 400 Companies That DO NOT Use GMOs in Their Products, Annie’s Homegrown, 365 and Amy’s, just to name a few.

We do have a choice. We can become fully alert and aware of the choices we make, including the foods we eat, if we choose to do so.

We can focus on the media’s perceptions of what is “right” for our society, or we can listen intently to our inner guidance and honor the decisions we make for ourselves.

Jim Rohn said, “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” Indeed.
