I first heard of meditation about 18 years ago while running through Central Park one early summer morning. I saw a group of people sitting a circle with their legs crossed and eyes closed. One person was guiding them through a series of “Om” chants and I didn’t know what it meant at the time. I was intrigued, so I sat next to a tree not too far from the group and watched intently.
I must have had a look of bewilderment, because a woman approached me and said, “They’re meditating, if you didn’t know.” I was out of breath from running six miles but by listening to their chants I felt amazingly calm. My breathing slowed down drastically and I found more focus when I ran the remainder of the time.
I am currently being guided by The Isha Kriya Meditation with Sadghuru. I believe I’m on my 100th day of meditating and I can’t believe the wonderful changes that have occurred in my life. I am running again and in reading this guest post it’s taught me how meditation can really supercharge your running state. Hope you enjoy it.
Almost all of us want to be the best versions of ourselves. We all want to be successful at our chosen field. We all want to prosper in our personal, social and professional life.
But with these overwhelming demands, it could sometimes take a toll on our body. We put too much pressure on ourselves that sometimes our brain and body get exhausted.
Is there a way to boost our mental and body function?
Great news is, there is!
A powerful combination of meditation and running are sure hit to supercharge not just your body but your mental function as well.
Here’s how running and meditation can give you a supercharged body and mind.
- Running to Supercharge Your Body
If you want to establish an active lifestyle, you should start running now. It’s the easiest form of exercise which does not require much skill or any equipment at all. You just need a pair of running shoes (probably headphones and an upbeat playlist) and you’re good to go.
How can running supercharge your body?
- It makes you happier. Ever heard of a runner’s high? Running stimulates the production of endocannabinoids – a feel good hormone. 30-minutes of running can make the blues disappear and make you feel good.
- It helps you in achieving a fit and healthy body. Running everyday will burn those extra calories away and in no time, you can fit on your old pair of jeans again.
- Running strengthens your bones.
- It boosts your immune system.
- It lowers your risk of acquiring diseases.
- It adds years to your life
- It strengthens your lungs and helps prevent blood pressure.
- It’s also great in reducing your stress and anxiety level.
- It increases your joint strength and stability.
The list of benefits of running to your body is endless. If you’re a beginner, start with a few minutes or miles first then you can increase it as you go. You’ll be surprised at how in a short period, running can’t only give you toned legs but also a fit body.
- Meditation for Peace
Did I do the report correctly? What if my boss won’t like it and won’t give me my much-awaited promotion?
Are the kids eating healthy foods at school? What if they’re just having a bag of potato chips for lunch?
Will my savings be enough to cover any future expenditure?
Will my healthcare be enough to cover family sickness and emergencies?
These are just some of the questions that have been keeping us up all night.Fears, worries and anxieties can’t only give us countless of sleepless nights but they can also give negative effects on our mind and body.
While we don’t have control on some circumstances, like how your boss has been nagging you on this project or how your kids have been screaming your name every 15 seconds, you have full control on how you react at things.
Give yourself some peace and quiet time by practicing meditation every day.
Meditation is a brain exercise which helps you in dealing with negative circumstances better. It refreshes your brain which gives you a sense of calmness and peace. It lowers your anxiety and stress level significantly. People who meditate are better at coping things since their mind is clearer. When you have a clear mind, you’ll be able to think better hence you make better decisions.
- Multiple Effects of Running + Meditation
We’ve already established the positive effect of running on our body and how meditation can boost your mental capacity.
If we combine meditation and running, are the benefits also compounded?
Running, combined with meditation, can certainly make your mind and body stronger. Meditation helps your ability to focus on things and running compounds that focus – to your surroundings, to the path that you’re taking, to your breath and sweat as you run.
Here are some tips on how you can get the most of your running meditation:
- Sit still for a few minutes before running and experience a deep relaxation by focusing on your breath.
- Be observant of your surrounding and make a mental note of everything that you see.
- Focus on your posture and breathing.
- Clear your thoughts of negativity and just feel every body parts as they move.
Start your day right by allotting at least 30 minutes of running while meditating and spend the rest of your day with 100% productivity and energy.
