Pain Has Potential

grief quote

In my previous post I shared that my story about grief has been featured in a new book by Tom Sweetman, “From Grief to Greatness: A Collection of True Stories and Lessons on Living Life after Loss.” I am honored to share this guest post written by Tom which describes his openness about grief and the lessons he found within.

The truth in life is we have fantasies—how we want to be seen, how we see others which is filtered through our perceptions of the world. There is another side to life we ignore, because if it is uncomfortable we don’t want to deal with it.

“What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” – Helen Keller

Life in essence has positive and negatives and when we can see the balance we can move forward with love. Problems and pain require discipline and a different mindset. For me It wasn’t until my mother passed away that I learnt this. I made a choice to learn from the pain from the grief I experienced, I had seen people use their pain of death in a way that wasn’t serving them but harming them. For sure I felt deep pain and suffering, but there was a point where I realised what I was thinking creates my reality. One question that really shifted the pain from grief was the following:

If I were to pass away how would I like my mum to live on?

My answers: Live to the full, remember me in her heart, live with joy, smile everyday, be happy, treat others how you want to be treated. Be the best version of you, enjoy nature, help others grow. Love.

This question shifted my whole perspective on pain and loss and made me realise pain has potential and behind that pain was love.

The answers that I had written in relation to my mum are a reflection of my values I live my life everyday following these because they are my truths.

When you move out of the way of yourself, there is love.

It’s your turn. Has the grief you experienced helped to shape your reality? Please share your comments below.
