In searching for an organization which would tug at my heart strings, HelpAge International came to mind. Their mission is to help older people claim their rights, challenge discrimination and overcome poverty, so that they can lead dignified, secure, active and healthy lives. Why wouldn’t I be so drawn to their cause?
After my Mom died of lung cancer back in April I immediately thought of how she would have lived if she didn’t have a fixed income, adequate healthcare and family nearby who loved and cared for her. Knowing there are so many older people on Mother Earth, not just here in the US but are suffering globally brought an innate passion to share their goals for this cause.
HelpAge International received the 2012 Hilton Humanitarian Prize, has six regional development centres and an office in London, UK from which they support their work around the world.
I hope there will continue to be foundations like HelpAge that bring hope, strength and awareness to anyone who is willing to live in the The Power of We.
